What I learned about having a yard sale

Tuesday, September 8th, 2015

There are a bunch of cheapskates, $12 is too much for five toys especially if they were all a bundle and even $10 was too much and you would be spending a lot more than that at a Goodwill or Ross or TJ Maxx.

You cannot sell any baby gear at yard sales, people will be cheap and not want to spend a good 40 dollars on a new baby swing or $35 on a new baby carrier or even want to spend $25 on a exercauser or even $12. You are better off selling it on craigslist or taking it to a baby resale.

And when you pack up after you are through and put everything in a pile to take to charity, put the ad on craigslist saying it’s all free before you take it to charity, people come running to it because I woke up the next morning and everything was almost gone. But the rest I want to resell I put in my car including video games. But yet they wouldn’t come to the yard sale but did for the free stuff lol. I just wanted to get rid of it before taking it in so it’s less stuff to haul lol. The baby gear went in the garage since it wouldn’t fit in my car and I separated my brother’s stuff from mine and stuck it all in the other garage.

I don’t know if I want to do another yard sale again because people are too cheap and you don’t get much anyway from stuff you sell and my mom said it depends on what neighborhood you are in. I guess we aren’t in the right neighborhood for it. But we made $162.95 and my son made only $12. My parents made $28.75 and my brother made around $85 and my husband owes him six bucks because he bought his stuff at the yard sale. My dad bought this nice laptop bag from him for $70. Most of the money I made came from these game collector guys who dropped by to look at them and bought all my 3DS/DS game cases and half of the other games I was selling which wasn’t much but that was the most money spent by a customer at my yard sale.

But I am better off selling more valuable stuff on Craigslist.

Yard sale went better

Saturday, September 5th, 2015

We did better this time than last time. We had it further out on the driveway so people can see it when they look for it and also it was nicer weather so more people stopped by. But then the forecast changed so it got rainy and I had to pack everything under the cover and move stuff under tables, that made it harder to attract people and then it got nice out an hour before it was time to close up so I left it like that. But I sold half of the video games I was selling and sold all my game cases and I gave away that Wii Paper Mario display thing because it got ruined in the rain last weekend. These two men were video game collectors. I also sold half of my cloth diapers and sold some more of my coloring and sticker books from when I was a kid and I sold some of my baby clothes. I notice most of the stuff that got sold belong to my husband and me. Most of the stuff at our yard sale is all ours.

But one thing I learned about doing yard sales is cheapskates. People will want things for cheap. They come by and even a low price won’t be good enough for them. Three bucks is too much or 12 bucks is too much for five toys and for god’s sake I sold things in bundles and ten bucks was still too much for this one mother. So I sold it all for five because it was what she wanted. Then one guy that stopped by wanted these four sets of chairs for ten and my mom said $15 and it was still too much, my mom came out and looked at them and decided twenty and not go below it. The man all of a sudden wanted $14 for them and then ¬†$15. I swear that people come to yard sales and expect to buy things cheaper than resale stores.

But I hope the weather will be nicer and not be any rain and it better not change on us again like it did today. Too bad we don’t have a big huge canopy that covers the entire driveway.

I think what made us do better this time was nicer weather (last week was cloudy and windy) and we were further out on the driveway inside of on the side and in our backyard.

Yard Sale disaster

Sunday, August 30th, 2015

We didn’t make very much. It could have been due to weather or the signs were not good enough. But people still came and my husband and I made the most money. My parents only made around $11.50 and my little brother made $4. One customer said it was hard to see the signs. It rained hard at night so it ruined one of the signs so I had to tape it and it faded the color of the letters. It poured rain a few times and it was very windy and then we decided to close up before five and no one was coming anyway because it was pouring rain. My dad found out he screwed up because we had sold something of my brother’s that wasn’t meant to be sold and it was his car amplifiers. ¬†None of us knew what they were so they got sold for $2 total. My brother said he had them in the attic but they were’t up there. They were with the stuff we were selling. He hadn’t been using them anyway so he has had them at our house and I didn’t even know what they were when I saw them. But he took it well when he found out my dad had sold them. He was saying it was okay and my dad offered to pay him back for them. I think what he should have done instead was call my brother and ask him how much he wanted to sell them for and he would have found out then those were not meant to be in the yard sale. I think those were worth more than two bucks because I looked them up online and they are pricey.

But hopefully it will be better tomorrow and I will check the signs again to be sure they are still there and readable and if not, I will just go and buy some special paper people use for yard sale signs and use a black marker this time and get balloons again. It’s supposed to be showers only than rain and there is always next weekend and it’s supposed to be sunny next Saturday and maybe more people will come then.

Hanging up yard sale signs

Friday, August 28th, 2015

The yard sale is tomorrow and I made four more signs and my son watched me. I used Bingo markers and a sharpie to outline the words to make them stand out to the drivers. Then later in the day, I got everything ready, I got dressed and the kids and got the signs and the tape and scissors and left with the stroller carrying the signs on top of the canopy. I put the signs up at each train stop on both sides of the intersection so people can see them when they get off and I had an arrow pointing which direction. Then I realized mailing tape would be better so I went back home and grabbed the mailing tape and went to the other intersection and put up three more signs. Then I realized I should have put arrows on them too so I put them up anyway and tape them and make sure they stay (I hope) and then I headed back home. My dad was home this time so I left the kids at home and I grabbed the bingo markers again and the sharpie and left again with the duct tape. It was a good thing I brought it because the wind from the cars was making the sign I stuck on the fence flipping one side so I taped that side to the fence and I drew an arrow. I did it to two other signs too and went home. I still have the other intersection to do but I will do it tomorrow morning. I am looking forward to this weekend but the bad news is it’s supposed to rain so my mother decided we’ll do part of it in our garage. I hope it won’t rain hard. It was just sprinkling today when I was hanging up those signs and adding arrows to them. My dad also got some money from the bank for change.
